How to Handle an Orthodontic Emergency
While orthodontic emergencies occur infrequently, knowing how to respond when one arises can help prevent disruption to the course of treatment. In general, severe pain or an appliance issue that cannot be managed independently warrants a call to the office to arrange an appointment.
Common Emergencies
There are actually quite a few things you can do if something goes wrong with your orthodontic appliance.
Loose Band or Bracket
When a band or bracket remains connected to the archwire, it can stay in place while orthodontic wax is applied to manage any irritation. If the component detaches entirely, wrap it in tissue for safekeeping and contact the office to arrange a repair visit. Waiting until a routine appointment is not advisable, as damaged orthodontic appliances have the potential to extend overall treatment time.
Loose Wire
Should the wire become dislodged, tweezers or needle-nose pliers can be used to reposition it. Dental floss is another option for securing the wire in place. If neither approach resolves the issue, nail clippers may be used to trim the wire just behind the last bracket to which it remains firmly attached. When the wire is causing discomfort, orthodontic wax applied over the area can provide relief until a repair appointment can be arranged.
Poking Wire
A wire protruding from your braces can be managed by gently pressing it down with a pencil eraser or applying orthodontic wax over it. Before placing the wax, ensure the wire is clean and dry. The wax should be removed prior to eating and brushing your teeth.
General Soreness
After each tightening appointment, some soreness in the mouth is common and may interfere with chewing. Rinsing with warm saltwater can help ease this discomfort, though the solution should not be swallowed. Over-the-counter pain relievers are another option for managing the tenderness, and orthodontic wax can be applied to any components of the appliance that are irritating the cheeks, lips, or tongue.
