How Dr. Khatibian Can Reduce Tooth Migration and Mobility
When Is a Periodontal Splint Necessary?
When periodontal disease progresses, it breaks down the gum and bone tissue supporting the teeth, which can cause them to loosen over time. Traumatic injury is another circumstance in which teeth may become loose. In either situation, chewing tends to be painful and difficult. Periodontal splinting is one approach to addressing this problem, involving the joining of affected teeth together so that the forces of biting and chewing are distributed across them rather than concentrated on individual teeth.
How Does a Periodontal Splint Work?
Splinting may be carried out on either a temporary or a permanent basis. Temporary approaches include extra-coronal splints, which are bonded directly to the enamel surface, and intra-coronal splints, which require a small channel to be cut into the teeth so that a custom metal splint can be inserted and cemented in position. When permanent or fixed splinting is performed, the crowns of the affected teeth are physically joined together.
