Why Dr. Khatibian Recommends Tooth-Colored Fillings
Why Should You Replace Your Silver Fillings?
Silver mercury amalgam fillings were used for many years in dentistry. You’ve likely had one in your lifetime. In recent years, there has been a shift away from silver fillings for several reasons. Dr. Khatibian recommends replacing them with porcelain tooth-colored fillings because they result in a stronger tooth and higher aesthetic value.
The Disadvantages of Silver Fillings
Silver fillings are prone to edge deterioration over time, and as they weaken, fractures can develop that leave the underlying tooth vulnerable to decay. These fillings also undergo repeated expansion and contraction, a process that can cause the tooth itself to crack, creating openings where bacteria may enter and cavities may form. An additional consideration is that silver fillings are composed of approximately 50% mercury, a material that can corrode and leach over time, potentially causing discoloration of the teeth and surrounding gum tissue.
The Advantages of Tooth-Colored Fillings With Pearly Dental Care
Because resin onlays bond directly to the tooth surface, they achieve a very close fit that surpasses what silver fillings can provide. Preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible is a consistent priority in this approach. When a significant portion of the original tooth has been lost, resin-based restorations can be an applicable option, allowing the remaining tooth structure to be maintained.
Also, the resin used in tooth-colored restorations contains fluoride, which helps to fight off decay. The resin wears like a natural tooth and does not require placement at the gum line. This results in a wonderful, natural-looking smile.
