Understanding Jaw Pain and TMD
What Is TMD?
TMD refers to disorders affecting the temporomandibular joints, which connect your lower jaw to your skull, and the muscles involved in jaw movement. TMD can cause discomfort and make everyday activities like chewing or opening your mouth difficult.
How Can Neuromuscular Dentistry Help?
Neuromuscular dentistry considers how the jaw, muscles, and teeth work together. When evaluating jaw discomfort, your dentist may look at your bite and jaw movement alongside your symptoms to better understand what could be contributing to the problem.
Symptoms that may be associated with TMD include:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Facial pain
- Headaches
- Difficulty or discomfort when chewing
- Limited jaw movement
- Clicking or popping in the jaw joints
These symptoms can have different causes, so an evaluation is important before deciding on treatment.
